Klopp ´greedy´ for League Cup success

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp described himself as greedy for success at the club ahead of Sunday s League Cup final against Manchester City.

The German gets a chance to claim his first trophy at Anfield when his men take on Manuel Pellegrini s side at Wembley.

Klopp said he had developed greediness in his time as manager as Liverpool target their first trophy since 2012.

I am long enough in the business to know I am greedy for success, he said.

For sure we will go to the final and try and achieve this. It is more important for the club, the crowd and the players.

Lot of managers work their whole life and never get the chance to win trophies. After a short time we have that chance.

Of course I would enjoy it with all I have. Everybody…

Manchester United 1-0 Crystal Palace: Classy Fred strike gives Rangnick winning start

Fred scored the only goal of the game as Manchester United started Ralf Rangnick s reign with a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

United made a blistering start to their first game under interim manager Rangnick, but they were frustrated by a well-drilled Palace side for much of the game.

Alex Telles struck the crossbar before Fred s clinical finish secured all three points for the Red Devils on Sunday.

Victory for United boosted their bid to secure a Champions League spot as Palace suffered their first defeat at Old Trafford for over four years.

United showed the intensity Rangnick demands from the start with a high-press approach and Telles flashed an early shot narrowly wide.

The Red Devils were relentless as they continued to pe…

Switzerland 2 Costa Rica 2: Petkovic´s men set up Sweden last 16 clash

Switzerland booked their spot in the last 16 of the World Cup courtesy of a 2-2 draw with Costa Rica in Nizhny Novgorod on Wednesday.

Brazil s win over Serbia in the night s other Group E game means that Vladimir Petkovic s side finish second in the pool and will take on Sweden in St Petersburg on Tuesday.

Switzerland – whose last-gasp win over Serbia in their second game set them up for progression to the knockout stages – were second best for large periods against their already eliminated opponents, but did take the lead just after the half-hour mark.

Blerim Dzemaili took advantage of generous marking to power home from close range before Kendall Waston pulled Costa Rica level shortly after the interval.

Substitute Josip Drmic thought he had secur…

´No Italian has given more to football´ – Infantino calls for Stadio Olimpico to be renamed after Pa

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has called for Italian authorities to honour the legacy of Paolo Rossi by naming the Stadio Olimpico after the former forward.

Rossi scored six goals to claim the Golden Boot and Golden Ball as Italy lifted the 1982 World Cup, while he was awarded the Ballon d Or in the same year – the only player to win all four trophies in the same year.

During that competition, Rossi guided his side into the knockout stages as his hat-trick propelled Italy to a 3-2 group-stage victory over a formidable Brazil team, which included legends Socrates and Zico.

Rossi still remains Italy s joint-top scorer at World Cups, with his nine goals only matched by fellow attackers Roberto Baggio and Christian Vieri.

The former Vicenza and Juvent…

Forest still need to reinforce defence as Tottenham exploit lack of pace

The Nottingham Forest Premier League jigsaw puzzle is arriving piece by piece via mail order each week. There are still a few days left of sitting at the transfer window hoping the postman will turn up with the missing components after their shortcomings were laid bare by Tottenham.

The record signing Morgan Gibbs-White has completed the set in the final third, looking constantly dangerous on his home debut. He is the livewire to get the crowd on their feet and within five minutes he was dazzling Tottenham defenders with tricks and speed. It is no wonder Steve Cooper never wanted to give up on signing him, regardless of price. Home form will be key for Forest’s survival chances, so having a talent who whips up the crowd is an added bonus.<…
